Germany is known for its economic strength in Europe, rich culture and great respect for the environment. It comprises 320 higher education institutions divided between Technical Universities, Fachhochschulen (Universities of Applied Sciences), Fine Arts and Music as well as Fachhochschulen offering courses in engineering science, economics, social sciences, and design.
The Fachhochschulen are known by the theoretical and methodical but mostly practical studies which are in the form of compulsory internships in the courses and last from six months to one year.
Study System and Universities in Germany:

Studies in Germany follow a system consisting of two cycles of 4 semesters each:

-The cycle of basic studies:

Sanctioned by an intermediate or preliminary examination. In this cycle, the student learns the compulsory subjects constituting the biggest part of his schedule. This exam does not lead to a professional qualification.

-The cycle of main studies:

Sanctioned by a Diplom, Magister Artium or "state exam" graduation exam. The student has more choices at this level because he can deepen his knowledge acquired in the first cycle and also choose the subjects he prefers for a specialization.
